Perhaps ePals (http://www.epals.com/groups/about/pages/schoolmail.aspx)? I haven't
used them myself, but they are free and designed specifically for students.

our school uses gaggle for our kids. I was not actively involved in setting it up,
but I do know that when a student attempts to send an email including questionable
words - the email is first sent to the teacher in charge of the program.

Hi, Rebecca.
It sounds like you didn't have much input into this decision. I'd like to offer a
challenge. Go to those in charge and ask them why it wouldn't be better to teach
the kids that chatting is an inappropriate use of the internet in school. No matter
what email system the kids use, they can probably utilize chat. If that's the tool
which is considered inappropriate cutting off all use of a Gmail account (which has
so many more things it can be used for, e.g. Google Docs, etc., Google Groups, and
so on) really seems harsh.
Why do we have to be so hand-holdy and restrictive rather than taking the
responsibility to teach our kids to use the internet appropriately and responsibly
themselves? Isn't that what we're here for?

Your tech department should be able to block the chat function with the rest of
gmail (docs, calendar, etc. available). That's what we do but I'm not sure of the
mechanics of it.
