Brenda
Thank you for your posting about what college freshmen need to have in
their tool kits when they begin the next phase of their education process.
A school counselor and dear friend once said that "transitions are always
difficult." I have repeated this many times.

I appreciate the fact that this information you've shared comes directly
"from the trenches."

Candace
P.S. Your son sounds like a great kid! I liked his line about using his
ear to hold a pencil v. computer. Conjures up a strange image!

Subject: Re: Wikipedia?

I teach my students that they can use Wikipedia as a starting point. Yes,
=
information can be changed by anyone. However, many wikipedia articles =
contain citations for their information, so students can branch out from =
Wikipedia to more authoritative sources that someone else has already =
gathered, and perhaps from there they can find other citations with more =
information. Why reinvent the wheel? Yes, we'd like students to be able to
=
do their own research, but I've used the References section of a
peer-revie=
wed article before to find new sources for my research, so it seems =
hypocritical to condemn them for doing a similar thing, especially when =
their teacher has given them a very limited amount of time and requires a
=
lot of information from them.
=20
I think the point is not to teach them that Wikipedia is an authoritative
=
or reliable source, but to accept it for what it is and make use of the =
good things while being aware of the bad. I've never met a student that =
thinks Wikipedia is reliable or correct; they know better. But they're =
excited to find a way it can be useful to them.

My response is why bother either using Wikipedia and teaching students =20
to use it.

1. There are numerous other sources--websites and databases that have =20
similar information and much more reliable and peer reviewed.

2. The information on Wikipedia is notoriously inaccurate and =20
unreliable--anyone can change the text and information--I've purposely =20
done it.

3. Unless I am mistaken, I understand most colleges and universities =20
do NOT accept or allow Wikipedia as a cited source. Thus, one is =20
training students to use and rely on a source they are not going to be =20
able to use.

Subject: Request: 3rd Grade Level Adventure Book for a Boy

A teacher came in today and of course needs the book for this afternoon.
Her Teacher's Guide had a list of suggestions, but we don't have any of
these books. They are:
The Adventures of Sparrowboy
Sable
Third Grade Pet
The Drums of Noto Hanto
Rescue at Sea

Anyone have any ideas for similar books?
Thanks,

Hello -

=20

My English department has asked me to find a better way to review
vocabular=
y for the SAT. They are currently using worksheets and pencils which the
k=
ids don't pay any attention to. I am hoping to find something that will
ma=
ke this more interesting for them and help them to do well on the test.
Do=
es anyone know of an interactive SAT Vocab site? One that gives them the
q=
uestion=2C then goes to a screen that tells them if it is right or wrong
an=
d the correct answer if it is wrong. Or something like this. I
appreciate=
the help and will of course post a hit. Thanks!

Subject: Hit: Magazine Archiving

Hello -

=20

Next in a long line of hits I need to post...

=20

Another one from the beginning of September=85This one is on Magazine
Archi=
ving. I myself do not plan on having an index for ease of use. We do
have=
access to databases and there is not much use of magazines for research
pu=
rposes. I have kept the more academic ones until the storage unit they
are=
in fills up and then I will get ride of the oldest of those to make room
f=
or new. All magazines are offered to teachers for projects and the
remaind=
er is eventually sent to recycling.
=20
One person cited lack of space issues that were the reason for disposing
af=
ter 3-6 months on average. =20
=20
One person only kept ones academic in nature and only then because they
had=
an index that could be searched.=20
=20
3 years then our old magazines are up for grabs for teachers/students
to use in classrooms
=20
We hold onto all back issues of the more scholarly magazines (Time=2C
Newsw=
eek=2C Nat Geo=2C etc)=2C but toss the fluffy ones (People=2C Teen Vogue)
a=
fter a year.
=20
The standard used to be five years=2C but with my online magazine
database=
=2C I only keep two to three years. I have Time and Newsweek bound going
ba=
ck to 1977. This makes them a good source for primary research.
=20
3 years
=20
I put them in the TAKE pile as soon as I get the next issue - with the
exce=
ption of our cooking mags and building mags which are given to those
teache=
rs for classroom use.
=20
We usually keep about 12 months=2C although for the beginning of this
schoo=
l year=2C we cleared out all of the 2008's and only have 2009. Weekly or
b=
i-weekly magazines only get kept for about 6 months due to space
limitation=
s. I should probably also add that we only have "pleasure-reading"
magazin=
es=2C nothing for research since so many of those are available online.
=20
I only keep current issues of magazines. Students use databases for
resear=
ch=2C so we have magazines for leisure reading. When the new issue comes
o=
ut=2C I put the old issue on the "To Give Away" shelf. It works well for
u=
s.
=20
Popular: 2-3 years. Research 3-5=2C but see if they get used. Ours don't
an=
ymore.
=20
I am now only keeping the most recent 12 issues on file in the back room.
I=
have the newest issue in a protective cover for library use only and the
p=
revious five issues before that one on file in my magazine rack for
circula=
tion (I circulate them the old fashioned way with a pocket and card to
sign=
). All together I have 18 issues of each magazine available.
=20
I don't have much space so I purchased some cardboard magazine holders and
=
once they are filled I take the magazines and either give them to teachers
=
and/or the art department or I put them in the recycling bin. Sometimes=2C
=
with the monthly's I don't even wait for it fill up as I usually clean out
=
after a year's or six months worth. I do like to keep out underneath my
cur=
rent magazines the more recent older issues=2C which I allow students to
ch=
eck out. This is something new I'm trying this year because I got tired of
=
seeing those magazines disappear into my backroom and then just sit there.
=
Even if students don't check them out=2C at least they might get some more
=
use being read in the library.
=20
With all the databases we get through a GENEROUS Montana State Library &
fu=
nded totally our State Legislature=2C I don't archive any magazines. Any
i=
ssue in the back room is fair game for cut-up purposes. I do keep them
rou=
ghly in title order=2C but that's about it.
I started this policy about 4 years ago=2C and so far haven't had a
problem=
with someone needing a print issue. Sure makes my life easier not having
=
to inventory back issues of periodicals once a year. Oh=2Cyes -- I keep
iss=
ues out for 2-3 month before they move to the back room. I have 160 or so
=
students in grades 7-12=2C so I don't have a HUGE number of periodical
titl=
es -- mostly browsing titles anyway : People=2C Time=2C Outdoor Life=2C
Fie=
ld and Stream=2C Good Housekeeping=2C Hot Rod=2C etc.
=20
The former librarian saved 5 years of all magazines and stored them neatly
=
in chronological order. Nobody ever used these. I finally put all of those
=
in several boxes and stored them for teachers who needed to cut them up
for=
projects. I have 44 magazine subscriptions. I keep as many on the shelf
as=
I can. I circulate them until they start falling apart. In June=2C I'll
ta=
ke everything prior to 2010 and store them for projects. No more archives=
=2C and nobody has missed them.

Subject: Hit: Incoming freshman college students

Thanks for all of the suggestions on what to teach this years seniors =
technology wise to help them when they become freshman college students. =
The responses were:

1. Blackboard: I had several people discuss this and said it is highly =
used in almost all of the colleges around Kansas. My son, who is =
currently a college freshman, told me that this is a must to show to the =
seniors and has even volunteered to let me use his login and username in =
my demonstration so they can see what an active students site looks like.
=
We use Moodle here at the high school and so students are aware of the =
program but many people said that I will need to show them BlackBoard too
=
as there is a difference.

2. Email: again, several people said to make sure to tell the students =
that although they may not use email that much now - they will need to get
=
in the habit of using it daily in college. Not only do you receive =
important information from the college via email but it is the easiest way
=
to communicate with your professors.

3. Databases: basically, each department seems to have their own =
databases that they prefer. For example, my cousin who is a science =
professor in Missouri said that he has his students use www.pubmed.com or
=
google scholar. And I had others say the same thing but with different =
specific databases. But the important thing to remind them is they have =
to STOP the habit of just typing in a keyword into google and get INTO the
=
habit of using databases. They also need to be aware of the differences =
between academic journals and magazines.

4. Alternative search engines: I know that FHSU in Kansas stresses that
=
the students use Clusty.com as one of the search engines to use and I am =
sure there are others that have their own preferences as well. Many =
college libraries are going into Federated Searching which means that =
students have the ability to search for books and articles from databases
=
at the same time (like www.kslib.info). =20

5. HomeworkKansas: I did have someone mention to remind them that they =
can still use homeworkkansas as they do have college courses. I think =
this was a wonderful suggestion. They can connect with a live teacher who
=
can help them with their introductory classes and resume writing =
assistance. They also have a very nice collection of links to help study
=
for a multiple of state and national tests.

6. Citations: The students need to be aware of the different citations =
college professors may require and the tools that will help them cite =
their paper correctly.

7. Google Scholar: surprisingly, this was the only google ap that was =
suggested. I asked about Google Docs and Google Notes to several college
=
freshmen and professors from around the state but no one really seems to =
be using them a whole lot. As several of them said - it's easier to just
=
take notes the old-fashioned way with a highlighter and a pencil and paper
=
than anything else. Kinda interesting response.......the students say =
they prefer it this way as its simplier and they don't have to worry about
=
getting on a computer, battery power, connection time, ect. Plus, as my =
son pointed out - a pencil doesn't weigh as much as a computer and I can =
put it behind my ear to carry it to class :) .

8. Online textbooks: many colleges are starting to switch from required =
textbooks in print to online textbooks. =20

9. Social sites: people mentioned that although this doesn't really have =
to do with college education, it still affects the students personally and
=
is worth mentioning. Such as Second Life, Delicious, Facebook does and =
don't, Twitter, Glogster and more

10. INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS: this was probably the one that was =
mentioned the most by college professors. They basically said that they =
see too many college freshmen who do not have any of these skills. =20

*on a secondary note, when I was talking to some of my family members who
=
happen to be college professors, they all started by saying how the =
students need to know when NOT to use technology. For example, if they =
are in front of the class lecturing - they don't want to see the students
=
on their cell phones texting or on their blackberries. They also don't =
want students on their computers as too often the students are not using =
them to take notes but rather using them to chat, check facebook, or email
=
and thus are not actively participating in the class. In fact, I had more
=
of a response in this realm than anything else. They also said to make
=
sure this years seniors understand that not everything can be found on the
=
internet and that they will need to think critically inside and outside of
=
their class. =20

Well that is about it. I am getting started on preparing my lecture now =
that I have what I need to talk about handy. I plan on spending the =
majority of the time on Blackboard and email and then just touching on the
=
rests.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and help
