Hi Amy,

The description of your duties is exactly what I do at my school. Basically, I'm
responsible for any AV equipment in the building, ordering replacement wires,
bulbs, and helping colleagues keep the wires straight. In a big building, it can be
a full time job. My assistant and I have to make sure the equipment works for
before, after and evening performances. This is an addition to teaching information
literacy, ordering books, running the library and maintaining the collection. I
also help with all the textbooks in the building. I'm a busy gal.

Subject: question about media specialist job duties

Hi to the List,  I just joined.   I want to introduce myself. My name is Amy
Kravitz and I live in New Jersey. I am a graduate of the Rutgers University library
school(1996).  I have media specialist certification through the state. Approx. a
decade ago I was offered a position in a high school library in the area. I liked
the people, but I didn't like the job itself.  One of my main responsibilities was
to be the audiovisual technician for the school. Whenever there was an
event/assembly/afterschool program, my staff and I had to test the equipment, set
it up and break it down. I eventually left because it wasn't what I wanted to
do.   Originally when I went through the school media track I thought that
basically the media specialist teaches classes/orders library books, etc. I
remember hearing from other librarians on the list back ten years ago that they had
extra duties such as audiovisual work, running computer labs, wiring the school's
computers, working in a TV lab, etc. in addition to the original library work.
Even though I have the media specialist certification, I wasn't all that interested
or comfortable doing these extra tasks. Therefore I served for a number of years as
a youth services librarian in the public library before becoming a stay at home
mom. I am now looking to reenter the job market, but without much luck.   Due to
the economic recession there is very little hiring of professional librarians in
the public library in my state currently. I am thinking about returning to a school
but I am exploring other options as well. It has been almost a decade since I
worked in the school environment, and I'm not sure it's what I exactly want.   I
was wondering if I returned to a school environment, would I possibly be expected
to do all of the extra things that I listed above, such as running a TV studio,
wiring the schools computers, running a computer lab, filming school events, etc.
etc.? Is it more likely that one would have these responsibilities at the
middle/senior high school level or is this also possible at the elementary school
also?   Im just trying to get an idea of what is out there. As the public library
field is dismal I may consider returning to school for something else non-library
related altogether if I find that the school positions aren't to my liking.
Thanks in advance for any help/insight of this group,   Sincerely,  Amy
