I realize we are all busy people, but if a student expresses interest in a book, it
is our job to put that book in their hands. Another book can be found for the
display.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors.... but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Vent: Students wanting books from the display

Even at the academic level we use "dummy copies" in the display and have the
actual books on the shelves (or nearby). In fact, I scan the covers of the
books and then print them on photo paper. We then mount them on foam board
(this will allow us to continue to use the same books over again for other
projects, if needed).

We also add an acrylic photo stand (the kind you can purchase from the
dollar store for $2 or so) and insert information about where the books
might be located (similar to a "shelf talker" note--- see the Texas School
Librarian's wiki at: http://txschoollibrarians.wikispaces.com/Templates
for a copy of a template for a shelf talker).

In addition, I always take photos of the displays to keep as possible
digital projects, Animoto promotions, or website photos. It also reminds me
of what resources we used, the theme, the materials that we might need to
add or update, etc.

Finally, we always create a bibliography of the materials that were used in
the display so that we can quickly locate "that book in the display about
the ----(fill in the blank)---" When we have a Display Bibliography
available (even for the students and faculty), it allows for those who might
not have been able to get "that book" in the display, the opportunity to
look for it later when they have more time to read it --- or it becomes
available. It also helps me to remember what books were included. Some of
the bibliographies that we have used for displays are listed on the CML's
webpage: http://www.library.okstate.edu/cml/bibliographies/bibindex.htm
(and even this is always a work in progress!)

Remember--- save the child...not the book!! Take the book out of the
display and share it with them when you have them "hooked"...and ask them to
help you create the NEXT display! (You might even let them have "first
choice" in grabbing a book from the display IF they help you get materials
together, help you in shelving, or just help in the library...remember,
you're building future readers!)

Good luck!
