Dear Johan
I am aware that ISLD is now celebrated throughout October to suit schools' needs
and attendances,
but the 4th Monday of October is THE day. As the co-ordinator of the event for
five years from the
year after its inception, I know this day was chosen because it was the day that
most schools in the
world were in session. That was the day that we had the Email Around the World
Project, co-ordinated by Cherie Sherley, with participants sharing greetings as
dawn rose in their
countries so there was a constant chain.
Although the pages are no longer available on the website, there were many grand
events although the
one I am most proud of was Growing the Future, held just after the events of
September 11 2001. On
that day, schools in every continent dedicated a part of their playground to a
garden of indigenous
species as children planted the seeds of peace and nurtured these as they nurtured
their seedlings.
It was my hope that one day seeds from these plants would one day be planted in a
garden in a park
at Ground Zero.
