Dear Laura
Your timing is impeccable because starting tomorrow there is an online conference
devoted to this
very topic. It is called Designing the Future and some of the best brains are
presenting. Details
are at yourschoollibrary.org and it is not too late to join because there will be a
new paper
presented each day through to November 13. Each presentation is followed by four
days of optional
moderated discussion on the forum.

Subject: [LM_NET] TARGET: library facility design research/recommendations

Greetings!

I have been asked to gather some information - preferably research, but
I think professional white papers or articles would also be accepted -
focused on designing a school media center space (for appx. 450-500
students grades PreK-6th, if that matters). I believe the administration
is trying to do some well-in-advance planning for an expansion that is
at least a few years away, so it would be good to have material that
looked at potential future needs. I don't need nitty-gritty details yet,
but I'm being asked about things like square footage and what kinds of
different areas should be included.

Please let me know if you are aware of any recent information that might
help fill this request. I haven't had any luck with the archive so far,
but if you remember some posts on the topic, please let me know. I'll be
happy to post a hit if there is interest. I'm off to search ProQuest
and the other databases on Galileo! :-)

"The greatest challenge facing us today is how to organize information
into structured knowledge. We must rise above the obsession with
quantity of information and the speed of transmission. We must focus on
the fact that the key issue for us is our ability to organize the
information once it has been amassed, to assimilate it, to find meaning
in it and to assure its survival. And that cannot be done without
librarians and libraries." ~ Vartan Gregorian
