"It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin barefoot
irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known,
but to question it." -- J. Brownowski

Subject: GEN: Research Question

Hello:

One of our English teachers just brought me a research question that neither
she nor I know the answer to...I am hoping you can help!

In a short paragraph, the same source is quoted twice.  Each time it is
quoted, parenthetical citations are used.  The first time, it says (Weber
A1) and the second, (qtd. in Weber A1).  Her question is why the
parentheical citations needed to be used both times - she has always taught
that, if the same source was used more than once in the same paragraph, it
only needs to be cited at the end of the last reference.  Any explanations?

Here is the paragraph if that makes my explanation more clear:

According to an Associated Press news report, a study published in the March
1999 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry suggests that "Babies whose
mothers smoke during pregnancy could be a higher risk of growing up to be
criminals" (Weber 1A). Claiming their finding to be "significant", authors
of the study point out "Our results support our hypothesis that maternal
smoking during pregnancy is related to increased rates of crime in adult
offspring" (qtd. in Weber A1). This study sends out serious warnings against
smoking.

Thanks!
