Dear Colleagues:

Welcome back to another exciting school year! Our AASL-SIGMS Virtual
Learning Community in Second Life continues this year. Here is information
about our September events:

· *SL Orientation Mtg*: Wed, Sept 2 at 8pm ET/7pm CT/6pm MT/5pm PT.
If you are new to Second Life, this is your opportunity to learn about the
basics of SL in a safe, friendly environment with fellow librarians. IM
Elaine Tulip for a teleport or come to
http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/127/103/29 (ALA Island).

· *AASL-SIGMS Learning Community Mtg*: Wed, Sept 9 at 8pm ET/7pm
CT/6pm MT/5pm PT. Guest facilitator: Doug Johnson. Doug is an
internationally known writer, speaker, consultant, and blogger on school
technology and library issues. See http://www.doug-johnson.com.

o *Are You a Format Bigot?*
Do your library policies treat information and entertainment in different
formats in different ways? Do you professionally regard some information
sources as superior because they are in print rather than online? Do you and
your teachers require at least one print source in student research papers,
but not one video, one audiocast, or one blog entry? Does an avatar have
less credibility than a presenter in a physical environment? Awareness of
how we may irrationally favor one format over another is the first step in
helping us provide better services to our young patrons who may not share
our biases. Come and join the discussion!
