Good morning everyone! Thank you to everyone who responded, everyone had great suggestions! Original post: I am looking for picture books that have social skills/character development skills for elementary teachers to read to their class (to introduce the concepts). They are also looking to possibly find chapter books with the same themes as companion books. Themes - Friendship Respect Gratitude Responsibility Problem Solving Cooperation Effort (trying their best) I have already looked at Nancy Keane's site http://atn-reading-lists.wikispaces.com/ and found some great titles. Are there any other titles I may be missing or even blogs/sites that have great subject lists? Thanks in advance and I will post a hit. Repsonses Social skills/character development skills for elementary Follett Titlewave--Curriculum---*Popular Subject Lists: Popular Subject Lists---**Character Education** * ***************** A book that contains a multitude of character traits is Inch and Miles, The Journey to Success by Coach John Wooden. I think it would work well for your elementary teachers. ************** I didn't read Nancy Keane's list, but I love *Do Unto Otters* by Laurie Keller, and *Cookies* and *Christmas Cookies* by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. ******* I have these in my library: The Way I Feel Books: http://www.amazon.com/When-Care-About-Others-Feel/dp/080758889X it is a series of picture books for children that teach character traits ****** I always had good luck with this book when trying to find theme oriented picture books. A to zoo: subject access to children's picture books Lima, Carolyn W Westport, Conn.: Libraries Unlimited, 2006 New one April 2008 ********* Florence Parry Heide's *The One and Only Marigold*, which was published in January of this year, is a good take on friendship, featuring the trials and tribulations of best friends Marigold (a monkey) and Maxine (a hippo). ******* Do you by any chance subscribe to novelist? I have written for them best book lists (one at K-2; one at 3-5) on 10 different character traits....including those you mention caring/kindness, respect, responsibility, cooperation, perseverance...) ****** Try COOKIES: Bite-Size Life Lessons By Amy Krouse Rosenthal; illustrated by Jane Dyer This would be a lovely, unique, and sensitive picture book introduction for the younger elementary age set. ****** I illustrated three books in the ParentSmart~KidHappy series written by Stacey Kaye (Free Spirit Publishing). They touch on these topics perfectly - especially "Ready to Play." You can learn more at < http://www.parentsmartkidhappy.com/>. Free Spirit specializes in books like these so you may also want to learn more about them: < http://www.freespirit.com/>. ******** I don't know if any of you subscribe to Novelist, but I just finished updating 67 best of lists--30 or so books on each. Among those are 20 character trait lists (10 for K-2; 10 for 3-5). You'll find these under Grab and Go lists. ********* Thanks again! -- Michelle Levy School Library Media Specialist Eton Academy Birmingham, MI rylor4@gmail.com (home) mlevy@etonacademy.org (work) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
