Hi Susan,
 
I read "Zen Shorts" with 5th graders last year. We read and discussed each  
of the parables. Then I told the students to pick one of the parables and 
apply  it to something that had happened in their own life. They wrote an 
essay on it  and then typed their documents in Word and illustrated them.
 
If you get some good ideas, please let me know.
