We will be hosting a panel discussion for pre-service (baby) teachers during
Banned Books Week on the topic of "Teaching the Banned Book." In
cooperation with our city-wide "One Book, One Community" project that is
reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, we wanted to provide new
teachers (and librarians) with the opportunity to learn from experienced
teachers and librarians what issues are faced by teachers and librarians
when they choose to select a controversial book for use in the classroom or
the library.

I've already compiled several resources, but wanted to ask for your ideas,
lesson plans, suggestions, or comments on this particular topic. If you
have any suggestions or techniques for "Teaching the Banned Book" (which
also includes "Defending the Banned Book"...and it also includes providing
those elementary classes with a controversial book during
storytime!!)...please let me know and I'll add it to our list of resources!
I would also love to share any information about "To Kill a Mockingbird"
with the audience, too, so if you want to suggest anything for discussion,
please let me know.

In the meantime, please check out our "Teaching the Banned Book" webpage to
learn about resources for "To Kill a Mockingbird" and other challenged
books. That site is: http://www.library.okstate.edu/cml/onebook09.html

Thanks for helping... and for reading those Banned Books!
