Here is the list of ideas to use for The Hunger Games in a book club setting. I
have waited to post it because the high school librarian and I each had our first
meetings and I am going to tell you exactly what we did in case you do not want to
re-invent the wheel.

We
decorate the library for book club, so we covered all the tables in
black paper with a large yellow diamond on the middle. We found the
mockingjay on the Internet and created several copies and sprinkled
them on the tables. Each table also had survival games pieces and the scenario. We
used this scenario, but changed the format to make it more of a discussion/game.

The
students had to take the 12 items (on cards) and pick out the 8 they
thought would help them survive. They then put those cards in order of
importance. This was to be a team-building activity because we told
the groups, they had to discuss why they wanted each object, how it
would help them survive, and agree on their choices. Then we used the
score sheet with the scenario and had the students total up their items
and the team with the LOWEST score were the "real survivors". I have
all the materials already created and you can just use them. I will
post them on the LM-NET wiki.

Would also love to hear if anyone else has had a book club meeting with Hunger
Games, I will hold at least 1 more meeting about the book.

It is on the Scholastic site. They have added another game since I played last
Spring.

Our Teen Librarian did a "Catching Fire" program (sequal to Hunger Games), and
focused on survival skills. We're in Nevada so we had a represenative from one of
the nearby national parks give a talk about some basic desert survival.

You could adapt the survival theme to suit your geographic location.

There are booktrailers available for both novels in the series (Youtube) or you
could hold a session comparing/contrasting it with Lord of the Flies or other
similar novels. Or discuss if HG or other novels could have "worked" in a different
historical context.
HG in the 1950's?
