My immediate concern (and obviously not a librarian one) is would another patron be
able to take MY book that I had been waiting for?

The Main Branch of our public library does this.  At one time you had to go to the
checkout counter to request the book you had reserved..and they retreived it from
the shelves behind them.  Then they installed self-checkout  stations even on the
check-out counter and soon the requested books were placed on shelves in a section
in the main area. There is a small alcove that once held  lockers and the lockers
were removed and extra shelving installed there.

I guess I never really thought about  the privacy issue. I reserve a lot of books
and never really noticed who else had, too.

This is off topic because it's about my local public library, but since you're all
librarians, I wanted your take on it.
Our public library -- probably as a cost cutting measure -- has decided that when a
patron comes to pick up a book that is being held, they can retrieve it themselves
from a row of shelves that is in the general part of the library. I went today to
pick up I book I was having held for me, and saw that right next to my book was a
book being held from someone in my Moms' club. (we both have names starting with
DAV).
While 99% of the time, I don't think anyone really cares who sees what they're
reading, it occurred to me this is a violation of the Library Bill of Rights.
Do the rest of you see it this way? What would you do if you're local library
decided to use this system?
