Hi all, My public library also has open, self-serve reserve shelves. However, the books are not identified by name, but rather by library card number, which is a unique identifier. So, unless someone has access to the library patron database, my book choices remain private. This also reduces the risk of someone else taking my books - the paper with the number is supposed to be removed by the Circulation Desk staff, who can check it against my card number. It's not a perfect system, but, given the move to self-serve, it's probably as good as it gets. There is a slip with the patron's name on it sticking from the top of the book and all books are arranged in alphabetical order by complete patron name, last name first ( in my case: Koontz,Antionette). So, unless someone is really nosy, you don't know what anyone else is getting unless you pull the book out. You look for your name and grab only those books that have your name sticking up. I have to be careful that I don't pick up the books of a friend of mine with the same last name as me. It does bother me that we can see what each other is reading but not enough to object. It is very convenient to find my holds and check them out myself. I can be in and out of the library within 2 minutes. Makes for a quick stop for a very busy person. Our public library -- probably as a cost cutting measure -- has decided tha= t when a patron comes to pick up a book that is being held, they can retrie= ve it themselves from a row of shelves that is in the general part of the l= ibrary. I went today to pick up I book I was having held for me, and saw th= at right next to my book was a book being held from someone in my Moms' clu= b. (we both have names starting with DAV). While 99% of the time, I don't think anyone really cares who sees what they= 're reading,=A0it occurred to me this is a violation of the Library Bill of= Rights.=A0 Do the rest of you see it this way? What would you do if you're local libra= ry decided to use this system?
