I would like to piggyback on Linda's question. There are very often differences
between the editions of books published originally in the UK and those published
over here in the US. Why should it be a copyright violation to buy something that
is not available over here, in any case?

Subject: TARGET

This morning on NPR's Morning Edition (npr.org), there was a story by reporter Lynn
Neery about the third installment of Stieg Larsson's Millenium series, The Girl who
Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Apparently, it has been available in Great Britain since
October 1, and many people have been ordering it from there through Amazon UK. The
US publisher was interviewed about this, and said, it was illegel - a violation of
copyright. He recommended we patronize our local neighborhood bookstore. My
question to all of you out there who are more knowledgeable than I, is WHY is it a
copyright violation? If a traveler brings one back, or a European friend sends one
as a gift, is that a violation? I understand and agree with the need to support our
local bookstores and publisers, so my question is really an academic one. Am I
going to order one for myself? It sure is tempting. If you are not yet hooked on
this series, I do recommend you read it. Will I order it for high school. No,
probably not.
