There's a series called Traces by Malcolm Rose that might work. I might offer
him Acceleration or Bonechiller too? They aren't vampirish :) but they are
certainly intense! I'd be curious to see how it goes. I've forgotten how old
you said he is but even Swim the Fly which is intense in a different way might
capture him. Matt De La Pena's books might get him too. Mexican Whiteboy???
If it doesn't have to be about vampires, he might try the Alex Rider books by
Anthony Horowitz or the Gregor series by Suzanne Collins
Maybe Joseph Delaney's The Last Apprentice series?
Don't let him miss the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull and Gregor series by
Collins.
Have you considered the Maximum Ride series? Low lexile but high interest and
impact. While the main character is a girl, boys just eat it up

Any books in the Percy Jackson series by Rick O'Riordan
