One of our English teachers is looking for the title of a novel written as a
journal that she read many years ago. The cover of the book looks like an old and
battered diary.
The plot summary is as follows: The American West is just being settled. A young
girl is beginning the journey west and is writing a journal. However, she is just
learning to read and write, so the first few chapters are very rudimentary. She is
filled with wonder with the adventure and all the new experiences. She ends up
marrying a man who cheats on her and leaves her and their children almost
penniless. The young woman begins to make soap to support her family and becomes a
business woman in a time when that was not the role of women. She faces many
problems and heartaches in her life, but overcomes adversity with determination.
She ends up marrying again; this time her husband is a man of great character who
supports her independence and encourages her.
The English teacher would like to recommend the book to her book club, but neither
she nor I can come up with the name. Does the book ring a bell with any of you??
