Well enough to say order something from your local bookstore, but if something is
not yet available there because it's not yet published on one's country, I find it
difficult to see any wrongdoing in ordering it from a place where it is available.
The buyers are not ignoring the American edition to buy from the U.K. if the
American one is not there to be purchased.

On the same theme, I also wonder about collectors and bibliophiles who purchase
editions of works from other countries, even if a version is available in their
own. A U.K. edition of a book will have at least a different cover, and very often
a different typeset and sometimes even different wording in places than an American
edition. If I am reading a British author, I may prefer not to have the original
British English altered or dumbed down for me because I am American and yet it is
usually impossible to get the original editions without ordering them from overseas.

Subject: copyright violation question

The Amercian publisher bought the rights from the author to publish the book in
English to the United States public. They give an advance on royalties to the
author. That means that the UK publisher may not export into the United States
English language editions. If you were in the UK and bought the book, or bought one
to give to a friend, that is not a violation. If you solicited someone to import
one for you that you then paid for , that is a loss to the United States publisher
who has the rights here. I don't know why they can't publish them at the same
time. I suppose it is an editing and production situation. I would love to have a
1/2 a dozen copies of Havoc right now but resisted asking the kids who were
spending the break with family in England bring them to me.

This morning on NPR's Morning Edition (npr.org), there was a story by reporter Lynn
Neery about the third installment of Stieg Larsson's Millenium series, The Girl who
Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Apparently, it has been available in Great Britain since
October 1, and many people have been ordering it from there through Amazon UK. The
US publisher was interviewed about this, and said, it was illegel - a violation of
copyright. He recommended we patronize our local neighborhood bookstore. My
question to all of you out there who are more knowledgeable than I, is WHY is it a
copyright violation? If a traveler brings one back, or a European friend sends one
as a gift, is that a violation? I understand and agree with the need to support our
local bookstores and publisers, so my question is really an academic one. Am I
going to order one for myself? It sure is tempting. If you are not yet hooked on
this series, I do recommend you read it. Will I order it for high school. No,
probably not.
