Just an update to the "insanity" that continues--- This was the
introduction to an article from *School Library Journal* (online).

By Lauren Barack -- School Library Journal, 4/7/2010

Oklahoma is on track to permit its schools to fire librarians if the state
legislature passes a bill in the next few weeks.

Drafted by State Senator Jim
Halligan<http://www.oksenate.gov/Senators/biographies/halligan_bio.html>,
Oklahoma
House Bill
3029<http://webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/textofmeasures/textofmeasures.aspx>
allows
school districts to effectively shutter all school libraries through the
2012 school year—an override of state standards meant to ease budget
concerns across the state.

Calls to Senator Halligan’s office were not returned.

"Digital Resources" columnist

"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend
hundreds of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff
development which have had limited success in boosting test scores,
but are unwilling to invest in school library programs that show direct
correlations to student success."
