Below are the three suggestions I received from my request for a good
classroom set of dictionaries to use with Intermediate (grades 5 & 6)
students. Thanks for the suggestions and here is the hit requested by
several of you.
1.) The dictionary I have found to be very 'kid-friendly' is the Longman
Study Dictionary of American English.
2.) I purchase a lot of dictionaries from Everbind. They have a huge
selection and a great price. You can call and request a catalog, but
you can also download PDFs of the dictionaries they offer. The
description on the website is pretty good. I think I ordered a Merriam
Webster specifically for the middle grades. Check it out:

3.) I would recommend that you don't buy print dictionaries and
thesauri. Instead show them some sites online. There are many
different ones online for free. Plus Microsoft Word allows you to
highlight a word and search for synonyms. Use the money for something
fun - like fiction books.
