I'm a teacher at Weslaco East High School in Weslaco Texas. Our school used The Hunger Games as our summer reading book during the summer of 2009. Our principal is extremely supportive of our summer reading program and therefore set aside funds to buy all 1,900 students a copy of the book. Our high school is over 90% Hispanic and most are economically disadvantaged. All of our students had to read the book during the summer and complete the summer reading assignments, which were created by our English teachers. All English teachers agreed to use the summer assignment as an exam grade during the first six weeks of school. Successes: The students really enjoyed the book. A lot of them couldn't wait for the next book "Catching Fire" to come out. Problems/Challenges: The beginning of the book is really hard for students to get through because they thought it was boring. To remedy this teachers did guided reading of the first chapters in class before sending them out for the summer. Once the Hungar Games started the kids told me they couldn't put the book down.
