When our school did this I sat in with the English Dept. also. I listened -
which was the most helpful to me - and took notes on when and what they were
planning to teach. This helped me to later go back and assess what I had and
to design bulletin boards and displays to tie in with what was going on in
the classrooms. AND - I suggested - "Did you know we have the greatest set
of ...","I know the best database to help accomplish that.", and ask
questions: "What type of materials, or what titles do you suggest I have in
the library to complement that?", "You know, we could work on a great
project that would include all those benchmarks, let's plan on setting some
time in the library for research"

I also took a copy of my library benchmarks, a list of our databases, and a
list of the videos that we had and as they were discussing theirs, I made
notes on my benchmarks sheets that correlated with theirs- subject matter
and timeline, put a check mark along some of the videos and databases so I
could make a Resource List to give them the next week. When one teacher
noticed what I was ding I shared with the group that I was correlating my
benchmarks with theirs. Some didn't even realize that I had a curriculum to
cover, as well.

I came across as a professional who is not only there to help them
accomplish what they need, but also busy working on my benchmarks . I know,
I surprised a couple of teachers when I told them we had videos and
resources that could help with different segments they were working on. In
addition I impressed our Vice Principal (who teaches English, also) as well.
He was also surprised to realize that, despite my emails, newsletters and
displays, there were some teachers who had no idea we had some things in the
library that would help them.

The next school year the number of times I had students in doing research,
with the teachers, increased. So did the number of requests for info from
teachers. The news spread and soon I had not only English teachers, but
also the History department and the Science department utilizing a lot more
of the library.

Subject: TAR: What are some ways a librarian can contribute to Eng. Dept.
Mtgs

Good Morning,

I have been asked to sit with the English Department during their common
planning period. They have started to re-write their English Curriculum. I
have shared my library benchmarks with them for each grade, but beyond that
I don't know how I can contribute. Does anyone have any ideas?? I teach at
the high school level.

Thanks.
