HOW ABOUT HISTORICAL MYSTERIES FOR SUMMER READING????

Historical mysteries serve a dual purpose: satisfy readers of history
and satisfy mystery/detective or "who done it" buffs. I first
discovered them via Lindsay Davis's "Silver Pigs" (1989) (ancient
Rome). Since then I've discovered and enjoyed authors/series for
every historical setting and period. How about 20th century or pre-
World War II Germany/Berlin?

"Rosa" (2005) by Jonathan Rabb--1st in series now 2
"A Trace Of Smoke" (2009) by Rebecca Cantrell--1st in series
"Berlin Noir" (1994) by Philip Kerr--comprises the 1st three novels in
the series ("March Violets"
      (1989 was 1st) now up to 6

Why not stay in Europe and visit next door early late 19th/early 20th
century Austria and Vienna?

"A Death In Vienna" (2007) by Frank Tallis--1st in series now up to 4
"The Empty Mirror" (2009) by J. Sydney Jones--1st in series now 2

If you want some historical background prior to or in preparation of
reading the above, I would recommend the following:

"Before The Deluge: A Portrait Of Berlin In The 1920s" by Otto
Frederick (1972)
"What I Saw: Reports From Berlin, 1920-1933" by Joseph Roth (2002)
"Berlin: The Twenties" by Metzger & Brandstatter (2007)--great
photographs

"A Nervous Splendor: Vienna, 1888/1889" by Frederic Morton (1979)
"Thunder At Twilight: Vienna, 1913-1914 by same author (1989)
"Fin-De-Siecle Vienna: Poetics And Culture" by Carl E. Schorske (1980)

How about "ancient Rome" mysteries for the next post?
