* "Ben and Me" - story about Ben Franklin and a mouse. * Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine * Boston Coffee Party by Doreen Rappaport * The Long Way to a New Land by Joan Sandin * Westward to Home: Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary by Patricia Hermes * The Birchbark House by Erdrich is a little lengthier than "American Girls" but I think 2nd grade might be able to handle it at this time of year. Also, the Native American perspective is refreshing * Sarah, Plain and Tall and the sequels * Candace Ransom's Fire in the Sky is short enough for 2nd graders. It's about the Hindenburg explosion. * There is a segment of the Dear America series called My America that often has young boys...the Dear America series, of course, is also outstanding. * The Earth Dragon Awakes * Honeycake by Joan Betty Stuchner and Cynthia Nugent * Please do not recommend Little House on the Prairie. See Debbie Reese's blog on American Indians in Children's Literature. These books create a stereotype for Indians that is no longer acceptable and was never truthful. - I had another response that said these would be great to use as a teachable moment to teach the ways things were misunderstood and inaccurate. Use your own judgement. * Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, Lynd Ward ( Illustrator) * Lynd Ward Young hero's of History series * The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman, Peter Sis * An Island Far from Home by John Donahue * Under the Blood-Red Sun by Graham Salisbury * Eyes of the Emperor by Graham Salisbury * Freaks : Alive, on the Inside! by Annette Curtis Klause, Cliff Nielsen * The Kitchen Boy : A Novel of the Last Tsar by Robert Alexander * Street Child by Berlie Doherty * Bradley, Kimberly Brubak. One-of-a-kind Mallie and Ruthie's Gift. * Deutsch, Stacia and Rhody Cohon. Blast to the Past series. * Osborne, Mary Pope. The Magic Tree House series. * Rappaport, Doreen. The Boston Coffee Party. * Whelan, Gloria. Hannah. * " " Next Spring an Oriole; Night of the Full Moon and Shadow of the Wolf. * http://www.weberpl.lib.ut.us/content/booklists/sort/t/36 <http://www.weberpl.lib.ut.us/content/booklists/sort/t/36> * http://www.exodusbooks.com/category.aspx?id=5311&gradeid=4 <http://www.exodusbooks.com/category.aspx?id=5311&gradeid=4> MY AMERICA by Scholastic TITLES (In order by historical chronology): * OUR STRANGE NEW LAND: Elizabeth's Diary; Jamestown, Virginia, 1609 by Patricia Hermes <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439112087.asp> * THE STARVING TIME: Elizabeth's Diary; Book Two; Jamestown, Virginia, 1609 by Patricia Hermes <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439199980.asp> * SEASON OF PROMISE: Elizabeth's Jamestown Colony Diary; Book Three; Jamestown, Virginia, 1611 by Patricia Hermes * FIVE SMOOTH STONES: Hope's Diary; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1776 by Kristiana Gregory <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439148278.asp> * WE ARE PATRIOTS: Hope's Revolutionary War Diary, Book Two; Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777 by Kristiana Gregory <http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-myamerica-reviews.asp#0439210399 > * WHEN FREEDOM COMES: Hope's Revolutionary War Diary, Book Three, 1778 by Kristiana Gregory <http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-myamerica-reviews.asp#043937054X > * WESTWARD TO HOME: Joshua's Diary; Book One; The Oregon Trail, 1848 by Patricia Hermes <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439112095.asp> * A PERFECT PLACE: Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary, Book Two, 1848 by Patricia Hermes <http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-myamerica-reviews.asp#0439389003 > * THE WILD YEAR: Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary, Book Three, 1849 by Patricia Hermes * AS FAR AS I CAN SEE: Meg's Prairie Diary; St. Louis to the Kansas Territory, 1856 by Kate McMullan * FOR THIS LAND: Meg's Prairie Diary, Book Two, 1856 by Kate McMullan * A FINE START: Meg's Prairie Diary, Book Three, 1857 by Kate McMullan * FREEDOM'S WINGS: Corey's Diary; Kentucky to Ohio, 1857 by Sharon Dennis Wyeth <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439141001.asp> * FLYING FREE: Corey's Underground Railroad Diary, Book Two; Amherstburg, Canada, 1858 by Sharon Dennis Wyeth <http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-myamerica-reviews.asp#0439244439 > * MESSAGE IN THE SKY, 1859, Corey's Underground Railroad Diary, Book Three by Sharon Dennis Wyeth * MY BROTHER'S KEEPER: Virginia's Diary; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1863 by Mary Pope Osborne <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439153077.asp> * AFTER THE RAIN: Virginia's Diary; Book Two; Washington, D.C., 1864 by Mary Pope Osborne <http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/0439201381.asp> * A TIME TO DANCE: Virginia's Civil War Diary, Book Three, 1865-1866 by Mary Pope Osborne and Will Osborne * HOPE IN MY HEART: Sofia's Ellis Island Diary, Book One, 1903 by Kathryn Lasky <http://www.kidsreads.com/features/0311-cool.asp#0439449626> * HOME AT LAST: Sofia's Ellis Island Diary, Book Two, 1903 by Kathryn Lasky <http://www.kidsreads.com/features/0311-cool.asp#0439206448> * AN AMERICAN SPRING: Sofia's Immigrant Diary, Book Three, 1903 by Kathryn Lasky <http://www.kidsreads.com/series/series-myamerica-reviews.asp#0439370469 > Erin Woods Media Specialist Lindemann ~ 827-1150 Bennie ~ 827-1300 erin.woods@apps.k12.mi.us -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
