One of my coaches was asked by his sister (works at a county library) to speak at a librarian's conference about leadership, about building a team. He's well-qualified, a great guy, and has done speaking engagements like this to business groups, etc., but never to a librarian's group. The participants are probably mostly public librarians. There may be some high school librarians there, too, but he doesn't really know for sure. He asked me for advice since I'm the librarian here, but that's the problem...I'm THE librarian of a smallish K-12 grade school, with no clerks, aides, students helpers, etc. Other than volunteer parents who come in once in a while, I'm IT, so who am I to talk about building a "team"? So I'm asking you guys for advice. And I'm not sure exactly what kind of advice he wants, but here goes...and I'd appreciate thoughts from librarians, aides, clerks, anyone and everyone, from all sides. What can I tell him from your point of view about building a team in your library? What problems do you have building a team in your library? How do you get your folks to "join the team"? Anything you'd like to add would be grrrreat! I'll pass it along to him. Thanks!
