Dear LM_Netters:

Please read this announcement for information about a new book discussion in
2nd Life:

*AASL-SIGMS Book Discussion in Second Life*
facilitated by Sarah Sindelar ssindelar@brandon.k12.mi.us (samanda
Undercroft in 2nd Life)

During one of the most recent AASL-ISTE SIGMS events David Hurst spoke to
teacher librarians about school libraries and NCA accreditation. While many
schools use a different accreditation system, the underlying question
remains, "What makes a stellar school library program rise above the playing
field?" That answer revolves around the impact that the library program has
on student learning. What role does the librarian play in that learning? How
can that role be strengthened and highlighted in these troubling times?

To begin to answer some of these tough questions, we invite you to join us
in a book study of *Librarians as Learning Specialists: Meeting the Learning
Imperative for the 21st Century* by Allison Zmuda, Violet Harada, and Grant
Wiggins. Prices are displayed here <http://bit.ly/afo5Ur>

This book is especially powerful because the co author, Allison Zmuda, comes
from an instructional, curriculum, and assessment focused background and
sees the power of a highly functioning school library program. The book is
128 pages and is aimed at two specific audiences; administrators and
librarians. Each of the 4 chapters is is uniquely broken into four parts:
Part 1) Summarizing of the key ideas from the known research and literature,
Part 2) Specifically written for administrators - identification of problems
that administrators and staff will face during implementation
Part 3) Addresses challenges that learning specialists will face and how
administrators need to address these challenges
Part 4) Specifically written for librarians - suggestions, examples, and
discussion.

Here's a schedule for the book study:

Format: Voice and text chat
Length: 1 hour
Time: 7:30 Eastern / 6:30Central / 5:30Mountain / 4:30 Pacific
