Earlier this afternoon I posted a request for survey participation about K-12 schools and kids who lack Internet/computers at home. Several people contacted me to remind me that public libraries are wonderful resources for these kids. So true! In fact one of my survey questions is about whether kids in the participants' neighborhoods have access to public libraries or after school programs. The reason I did not mention them in my query is because I am concentrating on what public schools are doing, and what more they can do to help these kids. I wish all kids had public library access. In my old neighborhood, the kids with the greatest need were separated from the nearest public library by a multi-lane freeway and a distance of several miles. Yes there are overpasses but I would never have allowed my child to take the trek. But by no means did I mean to overlook public libraries! They are a vital asset that we need to continue to support, especially in these hard times! Cheers, mabell PS If you want to go to my survey, the link is: http://bit.ly/digidivide I have already had 26 responses. Of these, 11 say that kids have access to public libraries. It will be interesting to see how the numbers fare as more people participate. -- ********************************* "Try Curiosity!"--Dorothy Parker ********************************* Dr. Mary Ann Bell Associate Professor Sam Houston State University A Member of the Texas State University System Department of Library Science lis_mah@shsu.edu drmaryannbell@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
