I am with the respectfully disagree camp. I have a fixed/flex schedule for a k-8
school. Fixed for preschool-(three year olds) through 4th grade. Flex blocks for
5th through 8th. I see every kid under age 10 every other week. I work in the
classrooms and with the teachers 5th through 8th. My job is to give those students
what they don't get in the classroom but also support and reinforce the classroom
learning. That means of course that I do read aloud, teach poetry, genre, and that
they often get the "gift of time" to read self selected material. It also means
that I teach information literacy- website evaluation, using the dictionary,
database searching, how to use the library etc. I do think I have the best of both
worlds. I despise being prep for some classes because if I have to miss a class (an
authors visit, conference, co-teaching with another classroom) coverage IS a
problem. I am fortunate that we do work it out, sometimes with another special who
in her kindness and understanding (and knowing that the favor will be returned)
takes one of my groups with one of hers. (screwing up her lesson plan but as
specials, if we know anything, we know how to be flexible)
