My original Target was asking about using the new social networking features of MyQuest with junior high students. A hit was requested. I'd be interested in seeing a hit if you get responses. We have determined that we cannot use this part of Destiny with our 4th and 5th graders, because it allows for private messaging without adult scrutiny, which I think is untenable in a school context. Most of our middle school librarians were a bit leary. BUT, the good news is that there is upgrade coming in July that will give librarians the ability to monitor the messages sent, just like the reviews. SEE http://destinynews.fsc.follett.com/news.html I used MyQuest and the kids loved it. That said---in order for them to have an "account," they had to 'friend' me. That way, I could see all of their comments. When students started making inappropriate comments, it was easy enough for me to find out about it. It was very fun and new and exciting at first, and then the novelty wore off for most them... We use the recommendation feature. Students used the feature appropriately for the most part. A few students were recommending books as a way to send inappropriate messages to others. I will need to discuss cyberbullying and sexual harassment in detail next year to help students understand the issues. I wonder if the feature can be turned off for students who use the feature inappropriately? Because we can't see what else they are writing to each other, we decided not to turn it on. Besides, usually the kids are just looking then move on, they aren't logging in for each use. Sandra Carswell, Librarian S.C.
