I cannot recommend Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes enough! (due out Aug. 16) It is an excellent book and it should be on the Newbery short list. Fantastic character who develops well through out the story and it isn't too heavy handed with Katrina. Rather, it looks at the devastation from a personal perspective and is just perfect for 4-6 grade readers. For some schools though, there may need to be caution...she can see ghosts. Also, Justine Case is another humorous one, perfect for reading aloud to third graders at the beginning of school! I loved the child0like perspective of this book. You may want to check my blog at http://childrens-bookspot.blogspot.com/ While many of the books I have reviewed are for YAs, if you look in the archives you will find book reviews that target elementary. (2009 pub) Hope that helps! Christine Rayl, Librarian Bowie Elementary School Grand Prairie ISD, TX Reading is not a duty, and has consequently no business to be made disagreeable.
