[LM_NET] GEN: Merced Union HSD librarians update

At the special board meeting last night several of us spoke, as did students
and community members.  I think we did  make an impression on the board.
One board member said she was opposed to cutting the librarians.  Another
asked the district staff to go back and look for other areas to cut.  But a
third implied that given the fiscal situation in the state personnel cuts
are coming, if not this year then next.  We are VERY guardedly optimistic.
There was a whole laundry list of cuts and each had people speaking in
opposition.  The library supporters made up about half of the speakers so
hopefully we weren't lost in the din.

Thanks to everyone who has sent their support and good wishes (and please
don't stop).  Right now MUHSD has perhaps the strongest library program we
have ever had.  The passion, energy, and professionalism of my district
colleagues is truly inspiring and is keeping me from going off the deep
end.  Our communities are so poor and our students face so many
disadvantages that we cannot lose this fight.  Good library programs are
needed now more than ever.
