Kathy Fester writes: "Did anyone else read the Ms. magazine's interesting column about how TDWK is probably not the best book for contributing to a developing girl's identity--basically girls are objectified, peripheral characters and such?" Yes - "The Kid Wimps Out" (Ms, Fall 2009, p. 50) is interesting enough to discuss at a class I'm teaching on genderbased fiction. We are going to look at the the Wimpy Kid with a critical eye and decide if the stereotypes are sexist and damaging, or if the characatures are purposeful (tongue-in-cheek) to allow Greg to be the ultimate antihero. We also want to talk about Captain Underpants, and the vampire book craze among girls. For that, I found an article to start the discussion called, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fangs."
