Original post: I have some colleagues asking to transfer some of our books on tape resources to CD or mp3 for use on iPods for listening centers here at school. I'm starting a search for a "Carrie on Copyright" ruling on the copyright implications because I'm sure I've read that this isn't "okay" or at the very best, is an "it depends" situation. I posted to LM_NET hoping to find someone with some fresh experience with this who can point me to accurate sources of counsel before we proceed. To put it more succinctly: Can we make new media format copies of our cassette tapes? REPLIES: EX: Susie Converter has decided that it's time to get rid of all the old audiotapes. She's decided to turn them into MP3 files and make them available on the library server. Duplication from one format to another is not allowed without the permission from the copyright holder. However, the general rule is you may not change the format unless you have permission from the copyright holder. It is better to purchase copies in new formats. Media is not intended to be usable forever. While teachers may not like using tape recorders, they are still available ~ Barbara ***************** ONLY if they are not available for purchase in another audio format. Cheryl ****************** Not sure if it helps or not, but I was looking into this question for VCR tapes to DVDs a few years ago. The prevailing opinion, including from the university's legal department, was that you could make DVDs out of the VCR tapes, but you had to keep the VCR tapes and not dispose of them or loan them out while the DVDs were in use.
