Hello again -

I know this target probably looks familiar. I'm resubmitting because I
haven't gotten any suggestions, but I have gotten a number of requests
to share my HIT, preferably sooner than later. If it were just me I'd
shrug and start writing my own survey, but if this is going to get a
more widespread application I'd like to be sure it's as thorough as it
can be. So in the interest of helping the other librarians who emailed
me, I'm asking again if anyone can help. Please don't feel like you have
to send me carefully crafted questions - I'll be grateful just for
suggestions! :-)

Here's the original TARGET:

I teach in a PreK-3 through 12 school, and we are in the process of
introducing a new Information Literacy curriculum. In the interest of
both showing teachers that much of this material *is* already part of
what they do, and to try and ensure a consistent approach across grade
levels, I'd like to give the teachers a survey that will provide a
picture of current IL practices.

I'm trying to develop a set of open but short answer questions, like:

"Do you require a bibliography for assignments that require students to
use resources other than textbooks? If so, how much of a citation do you
require (ranging from only title and author to a full MLA format Works
cited list)?"

"What kind of online searching skills do you expect students to master
before your grade level? while in your grade level? Examples might
include using Google or another basic search engine, avoiding Google and
using the school's subscription databases, using specialized or
meta-search engines, using Boolean search phrases..."

"Do you require students to cite the sources for images they use? How
much of a citation?"

"On average, how many sources do you require students to consult for
inquiry assignments? Are they permitted to cite the encyclopedia as one
of those assignments?"

"How much do you evaluate the quality of the student's presentation
(grammar, design, clarity, as opposed to correctness of "answer")?"

I am quite certain that the Great LM_NET Brain can come up with
something ever so much more elegant and comprehensive that I could
alone, so I'd deeply appreciate hearing any ideas for other questions
you would ask on such a survey. I'll compile a HIT and post it on the
wiki for future use, and post a notice here that it's done.

Thanks very much!

"The greatest challenge facing us today is how to organize information
into structured knowledge. We must rise above the obsession with
quantity of information and the speed of transmission. We must focus on
the fact that the key issue for us is our ability to organize the
information once it has been amassed, to assimilate it, to find meaning
in it and to assure its survival. And that cannot be done without
librarians and libraries." ~ Vartan Gregorian

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution,
man. I wouldn't mess with them." ~ Michael Moore
