I don’t buy any reference books any more since the majority of the
information is available through our state funded databases. We are a small
rural school and I felt like that it was more important to supply the books
the kids could and would read over research materials. So far no one has
complained or let me know there was a problem and the elementary and middle
school libraries rarely get used for research. I do make sure that several
of my non-fiction books available to check out deal with the states,
presidents and other information often found in reference books, so the
information can be found in print.

I found that much of what I was taught needed to be done in the library just
isn’t possible with our budget these days and so I don’t even try to keep my
library balanced, I aim to get the kids what they need to learn to love
reading and raise the test scores.
