One way I called attention to our state books is to participate in the Read Across
America program http://www.nea.org/readacross last year. During the month of
March, each student (grades 1-3) signed up to read a book about a state (could be
biography, non-fiction, fiction, work by an author from that state). At the end of
the month we had a celebration because every student read his/her book and posted
the flag of that state on a large US map in the hallway. During the month during
library time students could share a little bit about the their state and the book
they read.

This year we are reading around the world using the theme "Go for the Gold--Read
Around the World." Again, each student will sign up for a country and read a book
related to that country. Our "Opening Ceremony" will be March 3 and the "Closing
Ceremony" will be March 24 (our spring break is the next week so we couldn't let it
go the entire month). Students who read their book will receive a gold medal (no
silver or bronze--all are winners if they read their book).

Subject: Re: state books

A couple of the postings I have read said that that person didn't buy country or
state books because the kids don't check them out, and teachers don't assign the
topics as reports. Well, I'm going to be one vote for the other side, at least as
far as state books go. A few years ago I had an opportunity to buy the updated
"America the Beautiful" series at a good price if I paid for the whole thing up
front. Never one to turn down a bargain I did it. There is never a time that at
least 3 or 4 aren't checked out. My kids LOVE them. It actually was a surprise to
me that they are popular. I bought them mostly to support the 4th grade
curriculum, but kids in all grades (K-5) check them out. Of course, they are new,
and bright looking. Don't discount state books just because teachers don't ask for
them.
