I’m doing a unit (of sorts) that I call Information Ethics, Rights and Responsibilities. One of the key topics is the erosion of privacy in the Age of the Internet. I received a piece of junk mail yesterday that made me want to clutch my copy of 1984 and huddle in a corner. In bold letters on the front it read: “EDWARD NIZALOWSKI, THEY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE! …. But just who are they?” I’m sure all of you have had your name plastered in big, bold letters all over the front of some unsolicited piece of snail mail. What was different about this one is that the entire background was an image from MapQuest of my home at 441 Brown Road, Berkshire, New York. George Orwell, where are you when we need you? The solicitation came from the magazine Reason [Free Minds and Free Markets]. I can even go to my own personal website to sign up for a free issue. I immediately became curious as to how many thousands of these must have been sent out and how the generation of something this specific to an individual can be done cost effectively. The magazine’s website is reason.com. How many of you received an inquiry from Reason magazine?
