My original post: I am sharing information about a new Minnesota author, Tim Kehoe,
with my third grade students. His first book, "The Unusual Mind of Vincent Shadow"
is about a middle school boy and his experience inventing toys while
adjusting to living with a new step-mom and three new sisters. Now my
students are asking for books on how inventions came to be and the history
behind inventions. A colleague suggested "365 Surprising Scientific Facts,
Breakthroughs, and Discoveries", however, this is too difficult for the
elementary level. I would appreciate any books you could suggest!

Here are your wonderful suggestions:

Barton, Chris. "The Day-Glo Brothers : the True Story of Bob and Joe
Switzer's Bright Ideas and Brand-New Colors" --this one tells about the invention
of neon-color paints; great format, good story

Jones, Charlotte Foltz. "Accidents May Happen" --Profiles 50 accidental
inventions, (ice cream soda, nitrous oxide, fingerprinting, dynamite) explaining
how they came to be

St. George, Judith. "So You Want to Be an Inventor?" (received a couple
recommendations) --Presents some of the characteristics of inventors by describing
the invention of people such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Eli
Whitney

Hirschmann, Kris. "LEGO Toys"--Describes the invention and development of
LEGO toys. Includes glossary and websites

Thimmesh, Catherine. "Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious
Inventions by Women" (received a couple recommendations)--Tells the story of how
women throughout the ages have responded to situations confronting them in daily
life by inventing such items as correction fluid, space helmets, and disposable
diapers

Here's a list of titles that my students have enjoyed:
Now and Ben (Barretta)

Here's What You Do When You Can't Find Your Shoe (Perry)

The Dumpster Diver (Wong)

Green Lantern's Book of Inventions (Hibbert)

Toys! : Amazing Stories Behind Some Great Inventions (Wulffson)

I is for idea : an inventions alphabet
written by Marcia Schonberg ; and illustrated by Kandy Radzinski.
Presents an A to Z children's rhyming book for early readers that
introduces inventions such as computers, microwave, umbrella, zipper,
and much more.

Mistakes That Worked (received a couple of recommendations)
Charlotte Foltz Jones ; illustrated by John O'Brien.
Presents the stories behind forty things that were invented or named
by accident, including aspirin, X-rays, Frisbees, Silly Putty, and Velcro.

Incredible inventions
poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins ; illustrations by Julia Sarcone-
Roach.

A collection of poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins that celebrate
some of history's greatest inventions.

Also -- World Book has a set of reference volumes on inventions. We
have a set (circulating) in our library and they are quite popular.
