Happy New Year! BE A GENIE IN SIX EASY STEPS by Linda Chapman and Steve Cole "You who are witness to these words...Welcome to the Genie Handbook. This book is unlike any other. If you are worthy, it will show you wonders." Thus begins the journey of step-siblings Milly, Jess, Michael and Jason who have just stumbled on an old book that will offer them a tremendous opportunity. Do they want to become genies? If they do, and of course, they do, they will have to take the six tests that will determine whether they have what it takes to be masters of magic. Step by step the four children stumble and struggle to achieve their goal which is actually to return to London and escape this new town their parents have brought them to. The book is dedicated to E. Nesbitt and the book has the same ring of adventure and magic and proving ones character to be worthy. As the children take on task after task, they become very fond of the bookworm who is their teacher and guide. They also begin to make friends and find acceptance in their new surroundings. Just when it looks as though they've overcome every obstacle, they are confronted with a couple of genies who have come back for what is rightfully theirs. The book would be a wonderful read aloud for a class of third or fourth graders. There's enough gentle suspense and adventure to keep things moving and the occasional bit of humor to keep things interesting. From Steven Fry's blog here's a very interesting video discussion which includes the actor and activist, Stephen Fry, Biz Stone, Founder and Chief Executive of Twitter; and Reid Hoffman, Founder and Chief Executive of LinkedIn. It is about 90 minutes long and is worth watching all the way through if you have the time. Heads up for those who are offended by political chat-- some is included in the discussion. If you're offended by such discussion please don't bother emailing me back telling me you don't think politics is appropriate for any of these listservs. ;<) http://www.stephenfry.com/2009/11/19/social-media-force-for-good/ Tom Kaun Thomas T.
