· What one thing do you wish you'd known about weeding and/or
selecting books?
Sometimes I think it was best NOT to know stuff when I did my first
major weed! It allowed me to be merciless. We lost over 10,000 volumes
my first year. Our circulation nearly tripled. (Completely contrary to
the thinking of "doubters.")
· What do you see as your biggest weeding challenge?
Explaining to patrons (admin and teacher) that there's a difference
between being in love with books and being in love with content. It's
what's between the covers that's important. "If the data ain't
great--you've got to eliminate." AND--the number of books you have is
subordinate to their quality.
Then--on a secondary level, teaching folks that you can--in fact--judge
a book by it's cover. If you're not going to get patrons (kids) inside a
book that looks old and nasty, it may as well not be on your shelf.
· Is there any message that you wish you could give a librarian
who
is leaving or retiring about weeding?
Weed before you leave so the "new guy" doesn't get the blame. :)
