My kids LOVE the Texas Bluebonnet Award list! I have enjoyed 99% of them
as well.

You see, I don't believe libraries should be drab places where people
sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of
employing wild animals as librarians. ~~Monty Python

matter, and people who matter don't mind."

"What I like best is a book that's at least funny once in a while....
What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading
it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and
you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That
doesn't happen much, though."

My students generally prefer the Caudill and Monarch (our Illinois
book
awards) winners when compared with the Newberry winners. I think it
is
because those awards, and others of their kind, are selected by
children who
have actually read the books instead of a group of librarians picking
books
on "merit" or some misguided notion of what children "should" like.
Our
state award list is made up of books nominated by students and teachers
and
voted on by students who have read a minimum number of books from the
lists. I find it a much more successful way to reward books that the
students actually like and will read.
