- Getting so caught up in what students are reading, and paying it
forward....

- Having the authority of hundreds, nay, thousands of librarians at
your beck and call when you have a question and go to listservs for
help....

- Showing some pretty cool technology tricks as well as sites
(especially web 2.0) to students and hear them say, "Cool! I'm going to
use that!!"

- Knowing that I have crossed all boundaries, cliques and departments
determined in high school by its staff and be an integral part in all of
them

- And of course, most of all, the relationships I have with students,
staff, admin, and peers. That's what drives me :)

When a student tells me they never remember finishing a book, but the
book I helped them find they loved. Do I have any more?

Subject: [LM_NET] Hit: the blessings of being a librarian

Original Post:

I have followed the slap in the face thread and can certainly
understand the frustrations. So, I thought to myself, why do I do this?
Well, how about:

the joy of seeing a student really connect with a book, author, or
series

knowing you contribute to the educational process whether the rest of
the staff realizes it or not

knowing you are working to create information literate lifelong
learners

groups like this where we can share, vent, celebrate, and pool our
knowledge and ideas

the appreciation you get from that teacher for whom you do find just
the right book, resource, website, or lesson

the opportunity to advocate for libraries, both school and in general;
we are a needed resource!

Followup replies:
joy of ordering and reading the many new books
working in a setting surrounded by many wonderful resources and
technology, not as limited as a classroom
working with and learning from everyone in the building
never being bored

how about the parent who quietly heartfully thanks you for giving a
child back the joy of reading that required reading had diminished

Hugs from the rotten little kids in the hall! I love my youngest kids!
You all can keep the hormones in tennis shoes!

Any others gang?
