I have found that the "genre" and/or subject awards are much more  
reliable (interest/readability) than the "national", general, or even  
ALA lists (general)--also they tend to compromise by having to be  
politically correct or please everyone and end up pleasing no one.   
Here are some "genre" awards I have confidence in.

Spur--westerns
Stoker--horror
Hugo--science fiction
Willa--women authors
RITA--romance
World Fantasy--fantasy
