Hi, Megan and others, Thanks to everyone for their thoughts on this subject. I think we're not looking to lock books up, but we middlers do understand the need to expand our collections for more mature readers (increasing access instead of limiting). In my library, I use book reviews for book selection. Those book reviews label the books 3-6, 6-8, 6-12, 7-12, 8-12, etc. As of now, I'm forced to abandon many 7-12 and almost all of the 8-12. For the past decade, I've avoided doing a green-dot/special section collection for 8th grade because we didn't want to open the can of worms. Unfortunately, we've experienced a major decrease in 8th grade reading despite attempts to provide books appropriate across the three grades. There's definitely a need to pursue options. I always appreciate the LM_Net brain - it never fails to challenge issues from many sides to help me make informed decisions. I've collected the feedback, and I'll be meeting with our high school librarian and administrators to make a group decision for our district. Thanks again!
