Because your Australian colleagues are on their long summer break (our academic
year is February-December) I am seeking your help as I try to prepare some basic
tools about library management for those just starting out, My target today is
budgets and while I have all I need about the why and how, I just need some input
into the what. So far I have identified these headings but what are the essentials
that you would add that I have missed? I realise things like SCIS won’t mean
anything to you and most Australian schools do not use jobbers to prepare their
books so that cost is not included.

a. Library Administration

 Access to SCIS or other cataloguing service

 Library Management System subscription

 Stationery (including barcode readers, barcodes, book covering
materials, spine and genre labels, ID stamps)

 Student stationery (if you provide paper, pencils etc for student
use)

 Photocopying and printing costs

 Postage, telephone and internet access costs

 Security

 Signage and display materials

 Other items such as bookends, wire easels, index blocks, hanging
bags, chart-hanging stands, tubs for series etc

 Purchase of essential library tools such as Dewey Decimal
Classification manual or SCIS Subject Headings List

 Payment of subscriptions to professional associations such as
Australian School Library Association

b. Collection Development

 Subscriptions to databases, web-based resources and other services

 Essential curriculum resources regardless of faculty (based on new
curricula, identified program priorities or collection mapping)

 Replacement of weeded/ damaged resources

 Faculty or year-level requirements and requests

 Essential fiction (such as CBC shortlist, class sets of novels)

 Development of existing programs such as Premier’s Reading
Challenge

 New but non-essential fiction resources (regardless of format)

 New but non essential non fiction resources (regardless of format)

 Professional resources for staff

 Subscriptions to periodicals

c. Equipment

 Cameras, projectors, televisions, DVD recorders/players etc

d. Capital works

 Upgrades, additions, maintenance, repairs to existing facilities

I appreciate any help you can offer, and know that you are sharing your wisdom with
more than just me.

Thank you

Barbara
