I have a 10th grade English teacher looking for a novel for class study. She
would prefer a fairly contemporary novel set in the Middle East and by a Middle
Eastern author. The "Kite Runner" is already used in AP classes, so she would like
an author besides Hosseini. Failing this, she is willing to look at contemporary
fiction by international authors from other areas of the world. We have come up
with some books by authors such as Julia Alvarez (Dominican Republic settings, not
Middle Eastern) and the Persepolis graphic biography. Normally I have little
trouble with these requests, but my mind has gone blank on this one. Any ideas out
there that can give her? What are your teachers using? Thank you in advance. I
will post a list of responses.
