I'm in a PreK-6 school, and the Percy Jackson series is a BIG hit. However, our
teachers really focus on students
selecting books that are appropriate for reading. Teachers know the
reading level skills of their students, expect students to know the
level, and then expect the students to select book within that
appropriate range. Honestly, most students below the age of 10 don't
have the staying power to read all the way through a Percy Jackson
book. It's not a big issue because our younger students simply "get
it" that those books are too much for them to read at this point. Of
course we do have a few in grades 3-4 that can and do read such books.
That is wonderful!!

I always tell kids, "Hey, you wouldn't appreciate me telling you that you MUST read
6th or 7th grade books, so let's be reasonable and pick a good book for each
person."

BTW,
I don't and will not have Twilight in my collection either. I enjoyed
the series very much, but do not think it belongs in my collection.

Subject: TARGET: Lightning Thief for K-4 School

Hi,

I am in a K-4 school and with the movie The Lightning Thief coming out in
February, many kids are asking about the book. Right now I do not have it in
my collection.

since the reviews I've read recommend it for grades 5 or 6 and above. I just
finished reading it and the only thing I found that might make it
questionable for grades 3 & 4

(very good readers) is the mention of the gods fathering children with
mortal women without being married. That is pretty much throughout the book.
I don't know if nine & ten year old kids will focus on this and if it will
cause a problem or not. If you have this book in your library & you have
primary aged children, what has your experience been?

Thanks!
