Once again we are debating the fixed vs flexible schedule models.The problem is
that many librarians in flexed scheduled programs around the US ARE being replaced
by aides and/or parent volunteers in reaction to budget shortfalls. Librarians who
have fixed scheduled programs are often covering contractual preps and have more
job security than those in the flexed scheduled programs who can easily be viewed
as extraneous.The Reading Workshop idea is an interesting one, especially if not
duplicated in the classrooms or used as part of the Reading coach's program.
However there are many other great ideas that can be used in the library program to
enhance student learning and encourage a love of reading.Magazines like Library
Sparks and School Librarian's Workshop contain many seasonal ideas for teaching
library skills. My library teaching career lasted from 1972 to 2007. At no time did
I ever run out of resources to use with my students as I was surrounded by
