I am starting my second year in a public school that is only five years old. When the library shelving was placed, they made an effort to maximize the teaching space specifically for staff meetings...go figure. Anyway, I became aware last year when I had a student in a wheelchair, that the space between shelves is too narrow for him to turn around. This created awkward bottlenecks and limited his access to that part of the collection. Does anyone know the recommended(perhaps legally required) space between shelves to accommodate wheelchair users? I finally convinced the principal that we need to move the shelves for equal access reasons and I want to arrange this before school starts. As always, thank you for sharing your wisdom.
