Hi everyone:

In my summary a couple days ago on my reading club responses, I missed a
couple.  One is lengthy and is copied at the end of this email.  My apologies
for missing these.  Coupled with my previous email, there are many great
suggestions.  Thanks to everyone.

Reading incentive programs work best if they are short and frequent in an
elementary school.  Elementary students lose interest when the programs run all
year long like Accelerated Reader or Reading Counts whether or not rewards are
given.  Actually the main purpose for reading programs is to motivate children
to read not to earn points and certainly not to earn a grade or require students
to read on a certain reading level.  I have worked with formal reading
programs on the elementary, middle, and high school levels and have most
recently worked in an elementary school (grades Pre-K-5) library.  Although the
school in which I was the librarian used the Reading Counts program in the
classroom, I sponsored a variety of reading incentive programs in the library
throughout the school year, including Read Across America, Read Around the
World, American Girl Reading Incentive, Books to Movies Reading and Information
Literacy Incentive, etc. The most successful program in our school last year for
first and second graders was Read Across America where each child earned one
mile for every page read. The class reaching the west coast first had a
popsicle treat after lunch.

I am an elementary school Library Media School, too.  Wow flexible schedule!
Here are a few suggestions for a reading program.  The most important thing will
be the need to collect and maintain data--it may be annecdotal, but you must
report back to your principal every month with something!
If I was designing a reading program. .
First I get a copy of Stephen Krahsen’s book the Power of  Reading read it cover
to cover
Students need to have the  power to choose their own reading stuff-so beef up
your Library Media Center into a "Barnes and Noble" bookstore.  Book displays
every where.  Posters, cut outs anything and everything to entice younge readers
to pick up a book
I would count time: not pages or chapters This allows ALL readers to successful.
All awards need to have some verification  e.g parent signature.
Silent Reading time: advocate for this time every day in every classroom.
Book clubs
Are  the best way to inject FUN into book reading.  Lots of treats and
eventually, having an all boys group lead by a GUY!
Next I start and Express Book Talk  students tell everyone about a book in 90
seconds or less  if you want a template script send me an email.  Right now:
Take photos as students present their book talks and make a movie of the still
shots:  Change it every week!Tomorrow:  Take these after a time and record them
and turn them into movies!

The LM_Net listserv yesterday included a posting re library clubs. Perhaps
you will find some of those responses useful as you plan you reading
program.
